Hello all...Larry Jinkins of C Co has updated his Vietnam Impressions and you can read the new version by going to the links and Hot Issues tab and clicking on Larry's link. It's some really good stuff and if you have never read them you are in for a trip down 589th Vietnam Memory Lane. Thanks for sharing Larry.

I just posted another short story to the Blog Page for those who are interested. The story is my reflections on a detail I was assigned to in Cam Rahn Bay - it was my first few hours in Vietnam in the late summer of 1967. I am always interested in your comments and feed-back. bobs@centerforsolutions.org

The names of the new 589th members found as of February 18, 2012 have been posted to the Blog Page. It is unbelievable that another 43 members have been found in just over a month. Great work! We are nearling the 500 member mark.

Boy do we have a grat thing going in the 589th! I spoke to Perry and we are pushing 500 in brothers membership. Sure glad Perry and his freinds had this idea of a reunion. As many of you are new be sure to take time to read the member list. as it gives you a chance to see if some of your buddies are on the list. You might even see a name from basic ot AIT. If you know of someone not on the lsit be sure to tell them about us and help them get signed up. Septmeber will be here before we know it, mu reservaton has been made already. See you all there!

I have scoured the site over looking for "A" Company Quarry workers. I can't seem to find any. I ran the old pony start "9" at the base course stockpile plus the new yellow D-9 that came in midway through my tour. Second and third shops were glad to see it. I also ran the 75 and 225 crusher that replaced it. Can't forget two 40 ton P&H shovel operators that threatened to slit my throat on Jack Daniels the first night in Nam. I told them to go ahead an slit it; at least I will get some sleep.

The 589th departed Oakland, Ca. on 10Apr67. Arrive Qui Nhon about 28 or 29 Apr 67 on the USS Pope. Will never forget that boat ride. We thought We had left heaven and arrive in hell. Weather was hot, the odor would knot you down. Thanks to God most of us made it.

To Al Williams - there are two John Marshall s listed on the Vietnam-wall.myarmedforces.com web page. One was an Army engineer who was killed in action on March 30, 1968. The other was a marine. The other casualties listed on the web page for the Army engineer are from the 591st Light Equipment Company. In very early 1968 the 591st was attached to the 27th Engineer Battalion outside of Saigon. In March and April 1968 it moved by ship from southern Vietnam to Da Nang, and thereafter convoyed north over the Hai Van Pass. See pages 364 and 365 of "Engineers at War." The Hai Van Pass was a nasty area with ambushes being common at that time. As best I can tell, your friend was with the 591st.

To Joseph Seehorn - thank you for your comment about table manners. C Company guys were sophisticated. We ate our C rations sitting in the dirt using only the best of table manners - and ate slowly since eating was the only entertainment we had. Once every month or two we even had enough water to wash our hands before meals. We also became great cooks finding ways to combine C rations into various meals, sometimes using local vegetation for spices. The Agent Orange in the vegetation added extra taste, and the C4 demolition compound we used to heat the C rations probably also added to the taste. The smell of burning sh-t and diesel fumes added ambiance.

Larry Jinkins said:   February 4, 2012 9:59 am PST
To Al Williams - I checked the casualty list we have compiled for the 589th, and your friend John Marshall is not on there. So he had to belong to another unit.

Larry Jinkins said:   February 4, 2012 9:56 am PST
To Al Williams - the 589th had been in Vietnam for many months prior to 1968. The only engineer battalion I'm aware of that arrived by ship as late as 1968 was a National Guard engineer battalion out of, I think, Idaho. But, they should have landed in Cam Ranh since they were moved to and based out of an area west of Phan Rang. See the link on this web page to "Engineers at War." Lots of detailed history in that book. Also, I found the story of a high school friend by going to Vietnam Memorial on-line web page, and looking into the personal comments section of everyone who died the day he died. By that means I located someone who was with him when he died.

Al Williams said:   February 1, 2012 2:52 pm PST
In 1968, I was attached to a troop transport ship. We were inroute to Vietnam with a battalion of Army Engineers. Shortly following our arrival in Da Nang. The engineers left the ship and boarded a truck convoy. Approximately two hours later, information was provided that the convoy was ambushed and several KIA's occurred. One of these casuaties was John Marshall. John was a former High School classmate and friend. I'm unsure if John was attached to the 589th. If so, I would appreciate any info. regarding the ambush and/or circumstances. Respecfully submitted, A.E. Williams

To Jeff Cowie - I was going to email you directly, but then thought it would be good to list some of the events of your Dad's time in Vietnam since others had similar experiences. He spent all of his time as a dozer operator except for a brief mission hauling ammunition into Khe Sanh in April 1968 during Operation Pegasus. In May 1968 the ammunition dump exploded at Camp Evans during an enemy night attack. The next morning he took a dozer into the ammo dump to remove unexploded ordnance - highly dangerous work. He stopped his dozer one day just before going over a mine. Later he helped pick up body parts of 5 doctors on the Hai Lang to Wunder Beach road after the doctors, who were in a jeep, hit a mine. At Song Pha he operated the Rome Plow dozer clearing jungle from Song Pha to Tan My bridge. Somewhere along the way he started smoking cigars. He was good at taking the tent door off its hinges on the way to the bunker at night during mortar attacks.

Happy New Year To All! Bob's story sent a chill right through me, guard duty in Viet-Nam was some scary shit, your mind plays tricks with you no matter which way you looked, something always seemed to be moving in the darkness. No matter how brave you tried to be. Most of us were 18 and 19 years old and we had to grow up very quick over there. Keep up the writing Bob and anyone who says they were not afraid over there is full of shit! Thank you Bob, you did hit the nail on the head.

Sterling Hester said:   December 31, 2011 10:01 am PST
I read Bob's story and related with it completely, as we probably all do. It was hard to read because we hate to dredge up the past and bring back the things that we have tried to repress for all these years, but I think we must get them out in the open. My hope is that we can gain some insight into why we have been the men we are and help us to move forward in the time we have left.

Bob Spencers story "RAIN" is a must read. It really is a memory joger. It is just like this all took place yesterday rather than over 40 years ago. HAPPY NEW YEAR, Looking forward to our next reunion in Branson.

Have a safe and Happy New Year to everyone.

Joseph Seehorn said:   December 30, 2011 6:01 am PST
Just finished reading Bob Spencers short story "Rain". It was very accurate , those feelings are there for sure in myself, and it is a good thing to see them getting plowed up where the sun can get to them, as apposed to plowed down . It's alot easier for me to know these things can be talked about. God bless you Bob for your help and your sharing.

Forgot to compliment Larry Jinkens on his table manners at the Showboat dinner...I even started to copy everything he was doing but lost count on how many times to chew before swallowing ... the girl was hanging upsidedown playing the violin 30 ft off the floor of the stage and I was momentarily distracted. Maybe next year I can get it right??? Once again it was the best getting to visit and enjoy some great company..
